The History and Evolution of Common Video Formats

Home use

Getting optimal advantage from S-VHS needed a direct video connection to the monitor, preferably through a S-Video connection. Then again, more ancient television sets didn't have S-Video or even any AV inputs. All the same, watching an S-VHS recording via a VCR's built-in RF modulator produces an obvious quality amelioration compared to VHS.

It is not uncommon to find the word S-VHS wrongly used to talk about S-Video connectors (also known as "Y/C connectors"), even in writing. This may be because S-VHS was one of the more typical consumer video products armed with the s-video connector. However, S-Video connectors became typical on numerous video other machines: DVD players and recorders, MiniDV handheld camcorders, cable or satellite over-set boxes, "TV Out" outputs on PCs, computer game consoles, and TVs themselves. Whilst the "S-" in "S-VHS" stands for "super," the "S-" in "S-Video" relates to the "separated" luminance and chrominance signals.
