Over the years we’ve transcribed audio from many people and organisations. Spoken history is always something that fascinates us as the people of speak of events that affected them that to that point unknown.

This particular recording is from a French lady who recalls her first impressions after moving to England in 1946.

We’ve transcribed huge cassette collections from county councils in England to recording the history of people speaking in their own words that lived in a small village called Ditchling in Sussex over many years since they were very young.

The Best Way to Convert Audio Cassettes and Reels

Whether it’s your teenage band’s first album, a heartfelt chat with a grandparent, or another precious memory captured on cassette, those old recordings are worth keeping alive.

Over time, audio cassettes naturally deteriorate — and as they do, the quality of the recordings, and the memories they hold, begin to fade.

Converting audio cassettes to digital files is the best way to restore and preserve those sounds for the future. It’s a delicate process that requires the right equipment, experience, and a careful touch.

With many thousands of hours of audio conversions completed, we’ve helped countless people bring their memories back to life. Whether you’re looking to convert old audio tapes to digital or simply want to preserve your audio memories, your old cassettes and tapes are in safe hands with us.

We love what we do — helping people beat the technical challenges of digital conversion and keep their stories alive for years to come.
We’d love to preserve yours too.

Reel to reel

To complement our transfer services, we also provide a range of supporting options such as audio tape repair and audio restoration to enhance and improve your old recordings.

Common audio brands we handle include Scotch, Ampex, Philips, Agfa, BASF, Maxwell, TDK, Memorex, and many more.

Whatever the brand, we’re familiar with the differences and make the necessary adjustments to ensure the best possible result.

What can be more wonderful than getting together with your family and reliving those precious moments again, watching your children’s eyes light up as they listen to cherished recordings or old sound clips? Often, you’ll find yourself explaining the stories behind them or marvelling at how wonderful those moments were.

Home recordings hold some of the most amazing memories — from birthdays to holidays and weddings — carefully captured on those much-loved audio tapes and cassettes.

Don’t let those old tapes fade away. Sadly, with the passage of time, far fewer of us have a reliable tape player that we can trust to safely play our cherished recordings without risking damage to the original.

Sussex University's Massive Collection of Bob Copper's Priceless English Folk Music

We were so proud to have been chosen by the University of Sussex to digitalise and convert their priceless collection of beautiful audio reel to reel magnetic recordings from Bob Copper. We’ve also scanned hundreds of images from Sir Richard Attenborough’s photo collection which he left to Sussex University.

Bob Copper, who has died aged 89, was a leading member of the famous singing Copper family of Rottingdean, East Sussex, and an important collector of English folksongs. His earliest musical memories were of sitting around the fire singing with his father, Jim, and his grandfather James Copper, who was born in 1845.

It's Time to Convert Audio Tapes to Digital Formats for Peace Of Mind

While our parents penned love letters, we crafted mixtapes.

Audio cassettes revolutionised our world. Coupled with the advent of the Sony Walkman, they revolutionised how we experienced and shared music, delighting our ears, and we cherished every moment. It was akin to discovering fire or the wheel. Our auditory pleasures became portable, offering a private sanctuary on the bus, during lectures, at the half-pipe, or post-breakup. Nothing silenced a nagging teacher or a parental sermon better than slipping on a pair of headphones.

The mixtape cassette, a novel form of self-expression, wielded power that rivalled a sword. That legacy endures, but the old tapes themselves, unfortunately, do not. They’re deteriorating. If you neglect the need to convert audio tapes to digital formats, you risk losing both the music and the memories. Our Supaphoto audio tapes to digital or CD conversion service, whether through a thumb drive or via Supaphoto Cloud™, serves as your time machine back to those emotions, the playlists as unique as fingerprints, live recordings, and music absent from any other format.

We’re all familiar with it—the compact cassette, music cassette, cassette tape, or audio cassette—a magnetic tape nestled between two miniature spools encased in protective plastic. Digitising reel to reel audio tapes is something we do everyday.

The Revolution of Audio Cassettes

It housed pre-recorded audio or blank tapes for personal use. It marked a pivotal advancement in both home recording and portable audio. Cassettes played a role in societal transformation, spurring underground rock, hip-hop, and punk movements, uniting people, and catalysing political change and artistic freedom. There’s never been a better time to transfer audio tapes to digital.

While many of us have upgraded our music collections from the days of hitting the record button when our favourite song aired on the radio, we’ve also preserved a few cherished cassette tapes. Take a moment to evaluate your collection. If it’s from a major record label, chances are the music is available in a superior format (CD or digital).

But if it’s from a smaller label, or if it’s a mixtape, a live recording, or those whimsical fake radio commercials you recorded in your bathroom, those treasures are irreplaceable. They can only be preserved, and time is slipping away. You deserve easier access to your cherished moments.

Do your cassettes emit hissing sounds, waver, fade in and out, or suffer from uneven playback? Does your tape player occasionally feast on them? Do you even have a working tape player? Are the metal components rusting, or the cassettes warped or cracked? If you’ve answered yes then it’s time to convert audio tapes to digital.

We Simply Love Our Audio Tape to Digital Service!

Yes! We really love providing our audio tape to digital service. But we also know that it’s better to avoid the issue arising in the first place so we advise our clients how to take care of their tapes too.

Remember to preserve magnetic audio tapes and slow down their deterioration, it’s important to store them in a controlled environment with stable temperature and humidity, protect them from strong magnetic fields, and handle them with care.

Digitising the content on the tapes is also recommended to create a digital backup and reduce the need for physical playback, which can contribute to wear and tear.

Some older magnetic tapes, particularly those from the 1970s and 1980s, are prone to a condition known as “sticky shed syndrome.” This occurs when the binder used to hold the magnetic particles together on the tape becomes hydrolysed, causing the tape to become sticky and less playable. We’re used to this at Supaphoto and can ‘bake’ the tapes at a controlled temperature and humidity in a scientific oven especially used for such purposes. This will aid the digitisation.

Finally Time to Transfer Audio Tapes To Digital?

Our expert technicians are on standby, ready to breathe new life into your aging cassette tapes by digitising them for the modern era. Our audio tape to digital transfer service will convert the content into CD and .wav files. When we’re through, it’ll be like receiving that mixtape from your summer camp crush all over again. Put on those headphones and relive the magic of 1985.

More Questions About this Format

A: Converting cassette tapes to CDs involves a process called digitisation, where the analogue sound from your cassette is captured and turned into a digital format. This begins with playing the tape through a high-quality deck connected to a computer with audio capture software. The sound is recorded in real time, then converted into a digital file such as WAV or MP3 before being written to a CD. At Supaphoto, we use professional-grade hardware and software to ensure every conversion maintains the clarity and character of your original recording. Our technicians carefully monitor the process, adjust sound levels, and remove unwanted noise to deliver a clean, faithful reproduction. Choosing a professional service like ours ensures a smoother experience, superior results, and none of the frustrations that can come with DIY methods.

A: The time required to convert a cassette to CD depends on the tape’s length and the quality of the recording. Since the process is done in real time, a 60-minute cassette typically takes about an hour to digitise, plus extra time for editing, quality control, and CD burning. Supaphoto’s professional workflow helps speed up this process without sacrificing quality, meaning most projects are completed within seven days of receiving your tapes. Our service provides both efficiency and quality, making it ideal for larger or time-sensitive orders.

A: Improving cassette sound quality during conversion is often possible using modern audio restoration tools. Techniques like hiss reduction, equalisation, and level balancing can make a noticeable difference. However, the final outcome depends on the tape’s original recording quality and condition. At Supaphoto, our audio engineers use advanced restoration software to minimise background noise, stabilise volume, and sharpen clarity, often producing a CD that sounds cleaner and more vibrant than the original cassette.

A: Almost all cassette types can be converted to CD, including standard audio cassettes, microcassettes, and older or less common formats, as long as the tape remains playable. If your cassette is physically damaged, such as a snapped tape or cracked shell, it may need minor repair first. Supaphoto’s specialists are experienced in handling fragile and ageing tapes, making small repairs where needed to ensure a safe and accurate conversion. Entrusting your tapes to our professional team ensures the best possible preservation of your recordings.

A: Even damaged cassettes can often be converted successfully, depending on the extent of the problem. Issues such as snapped tape, broken shells, or playback faults are frequently repairable. Supaphoto’s technicians can assess and restore many cassettes before conversion. However, in cases where the magnetic tape has degraded beyond repair, full recovery may not be possible. We always assess your cassette first and advise on the best possible outcome.

A: Whether you choose to convert to CD or to digital files depends on your needs. CDs offer a tangible keepsake that can be played in standard players and stored safely, while digital files provide easy access, sharing, and long-term backup options. At Supaphoto, we offer both formats. Many clients choose to convert cassette tapes to digital files for flexibility, as they can be played on phones, laptops, or smart TVs and archived without loss of quality.

A: To achieve the best quality conversion, make sure your cassettes are in good condition. If possible, give each tape a quick playthrough to loosen the spools and check for playback issues. Keep them dust-free and in their cases for protection during shipping. At Supaphoto, we begin with an inspection of every cassette before digitising. Our carefully calibrated equipment handles tapes gently while capturing the highest possible sound quality.

A: It is possible to convert a cassette to CD at home using a cassette player, an audio interface or cable connected to your computer, and CD-burning software. However, DIY setups rarely match the quality or reliability of professional conversions. Supaphoto uses studio-grade decks, noise-reduction systems, and expert editing to ensure crystal-clear sound and consistent performance. While home conversion can be a fun project, a professional service provides better sound, saves time, and eliminates trial-and-error frustration.

A: Yes, Supaphoto can easily manage bulk cassette-to-CD conversions and offers discounted rates for large orders. Our efficient workflow and industrial-grade equipment maintain consistency across all recordings, making this service ideal for archives, educational institutions, or collectors. Choosing Supaphoto saves you time and guarantees uniform, professional results on every CD.

A: Supaphoto treats the safety and privacy of your cassettes with the utmost care. All conversions are carried out in-house by trained technicians and nothing is ever outsourced. We store all media securely, offer tracked return shipping, and maintain a strict privacy policy. Your recordings remain confidential at every stage. When you choose Supaphoto, you can be confident that your cassettes are handled safely, respectfully, and professionally.

A: Yes, you can request additional CD copies when placing your order or even after your first conversion is complete. Supaphoto keeps secure backups of your digitised audio for a limited time, making it easy to produce extra discs for family, friends, or backups. Additional copies are affordable and convenient, perfect for sharing cherished recordings.

A: Our CDs are created to industry standards and will play on virtually all CD players, including home stereos, car systems, portable players, and computers. We use high-quality CD-R media and adhere to strict formatting guidelines to ensure compatibility. In the rare event of a playback issue, Supaphoto is happy to provide assistance or a replacement.

A: When cassettes contain multiple sides or tracks, Supaphoto digitises each part separately and organises them as individual tracks on your CD, mirroring the original layout of your tape. This makes navigating your recordings easy and intuitive. We take special care to maintain smooth transitions and accurate track order, ensuring your converted CD sounds natural and professionally produced.

A: Yes, you can customise your converted CD. When you send your cassettes, simply include notes on how you would like the tracks arranged or titled. Supaphoto’s technicians can edit, rename, and sequence the tracks according to your preferences. This personal touch makes your CD more than a copy; it becomes a unique, curated version of your audio memories.

A: The sound quality of a CD converted from a cassette is often better than the original. Digital formats remove background hiss and allow for sound restoration techniques such as noise reduction, equalisation, and volume adjustment. The final result depends on the cassette’s condition. Supaphoto uses advanced tools to achieve the cleanest possible playback, giving you a CD that sounds clearer and more enjoyable than the original tape.

A: If you experience any issues with your converted CD or are not satisfied with the quality, please contact Supaphoto immediately. We will review the original tape, re-evaluate the conversion, and if necessary, reprocess or enhance the recording. Customer satisfaction is our top priority and we stand by every project we complete.

A: Choosing Supaphoto for cassette-to-CD conversions offers many benefits. Our experienced technicians use professional equipment to achieve excellent results. We also offer custom options such as track ordering, extra copies, and refunds for blank tapes. With attentive customer care and a strong focus on preserving your audio memories, Supaphoto provides a reliable, affordable, and high-quality service that stands out.
