Transfer Micro MV to Digital
Convert Micro MV recordings to MPEG 4 with Supaphoto
When asked about our most prized possessions, most of us choose to mention sentimental objects or memorabilia. This is no surprise, as memories are some of the most precious gifts one can give or receive. Here at Supaphoto we specialise in bringing your precious memories back to life. This way, you don’t have to worry about them degrading, getting lost or damaged since tapes transferred take the worry away.
Micro MV is a Sony patented video format which was released into the market in 2001. It is the smallest video format available, at 70% smaller than MiniDV tapes. It belongs to the magnetic cassette tape media family and can hold 60 minutes of video – as a dv format.
Magnetic tape is composed of two essential layers. Firstly, it contains a thin layer of magnetic pigments mixed with a binder. This is supported by the second layer, which is a thicker film backing. The top layer, which contains the pigments, is the layer responsible for recording and storing video signals.
Unfortunately, despite the widespread use of magnetic tape media, this media family can degrade in many ways. For example, a common issue with MicroMV camcorders and other magnetic camcorder models that aren’t stored properly is binder degradation. This issue causes the binder to become soft and unlubricated. You will often hear media conversion experts and professionals referring to this as sticky tape or sticky shed.
Another issue which can occur with micromv formats is demagnetisation. In simple terms, sony micromv tapes can easily be damaged by external magnetic fields, like airport security checks and handheld magnets. New tapes have a level of resistance to external magnetic damage, but unfortunately this resistance decreases with age. Unfortunately, this can be worsened by binder degradation too.
These issues make it even more important to keep your tapes in a sealed and dry environment. But most importantly, these are reasons to convert your micromv video tapes sooner, rather than later.
Editing Micro MV Tapes
Micro MV formats don’t use the same codec as the widely known mini DV and DV video formats. Instead they use mbit/s MPEG-2 compression, which is the same compression which is used for DVDs. For this reason, Micro MV recorded video files can’t be edited directly using mainstream DV editing software. Examples of this software would be Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.
Instead, Sony provided a Windows PCs only video editing software. However, later versions of Ulead video studio also caught on and provided editing options for Micro MV camcorders. All of these options, however, were comple to use and often required knowledge that wasn’t available to the general population.
At Supaphoto we aim to convert your videotape formats to a simple MPEG 4 (or MP4 as it is widely known). This allows you to use a wide range of modern editing software which is available on both MAC and PC. Modern editing software is a lot more intuitive. And if it isn’t easy to use enough, we are happy to provide video editing guidance.
Furthermore, as you can see by reading our customer reviews on Google, we are also highly endorsed video editing providers. So if you don’t fancy the editing fun, you can leave it all to us!

The Risks to Old Film
Did you know that lofts and garages are some of the worst places to store your old tapes? This is because the magnetic tape inside Betacam cassettes is susceptible to damage from mold. Add to this the fact that increased air moisture and temperature changes can also lead to tape damage. This can only be fixed through costly and uncertain tape repair.
We believe that the best answer to this is to produce digital copies of your old footage to prevent possible loss or damage. This way you can have a ‘master’ copy in your original format alongside a digital transfer that can be played with most modern recording technologies.
A New Dawn Breaks The Beginning of VHS to Digital Conversion Services
One day, not that long ago, somebody had the very bright idea of inventing a round disc – purple on one side. That was the day that the lighter, easier to store, sturdier and longer lasting DVD format was invented. You suddenly found yourself referring to your recordings as your ‘old VHS tapes’ and for a while clung onto your video cassette player under the television. But the days of this format were numbered. Gone were the days of constantly having the clean dirty tape heads and seeing your precious recordings being chewed up.
