I needed two VHS and one Hi8 camcorder tape converted to digital format and I'm glad I found Supaphoto. What made me choose the company were the excellent reviews. I got an extremely fast response to my initial query and I was greeted by very friendly staff when I dropped my tapes off at the studio, and I was also very impressed with all of their specialised equipment they had. I wasn't looking for either the cheapest or quickest service but I was looking for a high quality service and Supaphoto are one of the few companies around that offer both excellent customer service and a high quality service. I look forward to using them again in the future which I certainly will be doing as I have more videos to convert plus some very old 1940s family photographs I'd like digitizing.

I've just had eight reels of childhood memories digitised from old 8mm film. The service and speed of Supaphoto is second to none. Friendly, fast, and focused on quality. I didn't even get to see the first run. It failed the quality standards and Supaphoto created a better version at no cost to me. I highly recommend Supaphoto.

I entrusted Supaphoto with preserving my entire family archive of over 2,500 assets. The project included loose prints, 35mm slides, mouldy VHS tape restoration, and full photo album scanning. They worked quickly and carefully, completing this massive undertaking in under three months. I was thrilled to receive high-quality JPEG and TIFF image scans alongside AVI and MPEG video files, all meticulously organised into dated folders exactly as I requested. Most importantly, my original media was handled with the utmost care and returned safely and securely. Supaphoto is truly the best in the business, offering an invaluable service for preserving a lifetime of memories. Highly recommended! Thank you.

The UK’s Favourite Reel to Reel Tape to CD Converter

he video alongside introduces our audio conversion service and includes sample transfers, so you can hear the type of results we aim to achieve from older recordings. It also shows how reel-to-reel tapes can be carefully transferred into a more convenient modern format, making treasured voices, music and personal recordings easier to enjoy again.

Our experienced technicians work in a fully equipped professional studio using pro-grade digitisation and playback equipment. Each recording is handled with the aim of creating a faithful reproduction of the original, while maintaining and, where possible, improving the quality of ageing audio.

Every reel receives a free inspection before transfer. If the first playback does not produce the best possible result, we can try alternative machines and playback methods to maximise the quality of the finished recording. This flexible approach helps us recover and digitise most audio recordings, even when the source material is old or in less-than-perfect condition.

Where recordings need further work, our specialist audio restoration service can help improve clarity and listening quality.

We can supply recordings in a range of formats, including CD and MP3, depending on how you want to listen to and archive them. Our studio-quality captures provide a reliable digital version for everyday listening and long-term preservation.

Supaphoto can also transfer other types of legacy audio, including cassettes, dictaphone tapes and CDs. If you would like to understand more about the characteristics of older recording media, our guide to how reel-to-reel tapes age over time explains the main factors that can affect their condition.

What you can Expect From Us & Our Advantages

Choosing Supaphoto to transfer your reel-to-reel recordings to CD means placing them in the hands of experienced technicians who understand how important old audio can be. Every recording is hand-digitised here in the UK, with multi-point quality checks throughout the process to help ensure the finished transfer is handled carefully and consistently.

We keep batches together and maintain the original recording order wherever possible, which is especially useful when you are sending several reels at once. You will receive order updates and tracking for reassurance, and your original recordings are returned once the work has been completed.

Our service is designed to be simple and fuss-free. Blank tapes and items that cannot be transferred are not charged for, and we aim for a fast turnaround without compromising the care taken with each recording. If you need help at any stage, you can speak to a real person rather than relying entirely on automated customer service.

Supaphoto brings more than 20 years of trusted experience to audio digitisation and has over 600 genuine five-star customer service reviews. We also support museums, institutions, television production companies and programmes, including the BBC’s The Repair Shop.

Alongside CD, recordings can also be supplied on preloaded USB drives and compatible digital photo frames, with optional cloud hosting available for easy access and storage. There are no hidden annual cloud-storage subscription charges.

If you have other legacy formats, our wider audio digitisation service covers additional media. You may also find our guides to audio tape preservation and choosing suitable digital audio formats useful.

For broader help with older recordings, our audio conversion guidance hub brings together practical information on preserving and transferring analogue sound.

We are really proud to be an ongoing technical partner to the TV Production Company behind for the BBC’s Repair Shop and have worked on multiple programmes.

Before & After Examples - Before You Convert Audio Tapes

Nothing beats reliving old memories but remade for today

At Supaphoto, we take audio quality seriously. Our professional audio digitisation process is designed to extract the very best sound from ageing recordings, whether they are on cassette tapes, reel-to-reel tapes, MiniDiscs, DAT tapes, vinyl records or other analogue formats. Even recordings that are decades old can often be significantly improved.

Using advanced audio restoration technology, we can reduce hiss, crackles, clicks, pops, hum and background noise while enhancing speech clarity, balancing audio levels and restoring warmth and detail to the original recording. Our aim is always to preserve the authentic character of your audio while making it cleaner and more enjoyable to listen to.

For customers who want the highest possible quality, our optional REVIVAL AI audio enhancement service takes restoration even further. Using intelligent AI-powered processing, we can improve voice intelligibility, reduce distortion, separate unwanted background noise and reveal hidden detail that conventional restoration techniques often cannot recover.

Magnetic tapes and vinyl recordings naturally deteriorate over time. Tape hiss increases, recordings can lose clarity, and physical damage or wear may eventually make them impossible to play. Converting your audio to a modern digital format now helps preserve your priceless memories for future generations while making them easy to enjoy, share and store safely.

More Help & Guidance

Converting reel-to-reel tapes to CD gives older recordings a much more convenient way to be played and enjoyed without relying on vintage open-reel equipment. It can be particularly useful for family recordings, interviews, music and spoken-word material that you would like to hear on compatible CD players, DVD players or computers.

The guidance below explains the main benefits of professional conversion, how to prepare an order, what affects pricing and how CD compares with other digital delivery options.

Benefits of Choosing a Reel-to-Reel to CD Service

Old reel-to-reel recordings can contain unique material that cannot be recreated if the original tape becomes difficult to play. Professional conversion creates a new, accessible version while allowing you to retain the original reel.

CD is particularly useful if you prefer a familiar physical format that can be played on compatible home audio equipment. Supaphoto transfers reel-to-reel recordings professionally and can provide the finished CD in a presentation case, giving you a practical copy for everyday listening.

Professional transfer also means you do not have to find, maintain or correctly operate vintage playback equipment yourself. Different reel sizes, recording speeds and track configurations can make home transfer more complicated than it first appears.

For collections containing several types of older sound recordings, our professional audio tape digitisation service explains the wider range of audio media that can be transferred.

How to Place an Order

Begin by gathering the reels you want converted and, where possible, keep each one with its original box or label. Handwritten notes may identify people, dates, programmes, performances or other useful details, so avoid removing them before sending your collection.

You do not need to determine the recording speed or technical configuration yourself. Reel-to-reel recordings can use different playback speeds and may contain different track arrangements, and Supaphoto can assess these after receipt.

When placing the order, choose CD as your required output. Supaphoto currently describes its CD option as professionally transferred audio supplied in a presentation case and intended for playback on compatible home stereo equipment.

For practical queries before ordering, see our general customer FAQs or the additional questions about reel-to-reel conversion further down this page.

An Easy Process from Original Reel to Finished CD

You do not need specialist knowledge of magnetic tape to have your recordings converted. Once Supaphoto receives the reels, the technical work involved in assessing, playing and digitising the material is handled for you.

Reel-to-reel can be more complex than some later consumer formats because tapes may have been recorded at different speeds or using different track arrangements. A recording speed can even change part-way through a reel.

That is one reason professional assessment is useful, particularly if you have inherited a collection and have no idea what equipment originally produced it.

Once transferred, the recordings can be placed onto CD so they can be enjoyed without threading and playing the original reel again. Where an old recording requires additional work, our audio restoration service covers specialist treatment of problematic recordings.

For background on the original technology, our guide to the reel-to-reel recorder and its history explains how these machines and recordings developed.

CD, Digital Download or USB – What’s Best?

The best delivery method depends mainly on how you plan to listen to the recordings.

CD suits people who like having a physical copy and want to play recordings on compatible CD players, DVD players or computer disc drives. Supaphoto supplies reel-to-reel CD transfers in presentation cases.

A USB drive may be preferable if you mainly use a computer and want the convenience of copying digital files to other storage devices. A digital download removes the need for physical media altogether and makes files convenient to store and share electronically.

You do not necessarily have to view these as mutually exclusive choices. An important family recording may be kept on CD for listening while additional digital copies are retained elsewhere as backups.

If you want to understand the file formats involved before choosing, our guide to common digital audio formats and their uses provides a useful overview.

Pricing Guidance

Reel-to-reel pricing is not always as simple as counting the number of reels. The amount of recorded material can vary significantly according to the reel, recording speed and how much of the tape was actually used.

Supaphoto’s current service information notes typical reel-to-reel recording speeds including 1⅞, 3¾, 7½ and 15 inches per second, with playing duration affected by both tape quantity and recording speed. A speed may also change during the same recording.

This is why it is better not to estimate the contents of an inherited reel purely from its physical size or handwritten label.

Supaphoto also states that it does not charge upfront because some tapes may prove to be blank.

If you have several reels, retain any existing numbering or sequence when preparing them. It helps preserve the context of the collection and makes it easier to identify the recordings after conversion.

Understanding Reel-to-Reel and CD

Reel-to-reel and CD represent very different generations of audio storage. Reel-to-reel records sound magnetically onto physical tape, whereas a CD stores digital information on an optical disc.

If you are also considering a file-only alternative, our reel-to-reel MP3 conversion option covers a widely compatible digital format.

Reel-to-Reel Learning Zone

Should I play my reels before sending them in?
You do not need to identify everything yourself. If you have no reliable reel-to-reel machine, labels and original packaging can provide useful information without repeatedly playing an unknown tape.

How long do reel-to-reel tapes last?
There is no single lifespan that applies to every reel because condition can depend on the tape itself, its history and how it has been stored. Our guide to the lifespan of reel-to-reel tapes explains the main considerations.

Will I get my original reels back?
Yes. Supaphoto states that original analogue recordings are returned after conversion.

Why choose CD rather than keeping only the reel?
A CD gives you a more convenient listening copy, meaning the original reel does not have to be set up and played every time you want to hear the recording.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Throwing away reel boxes or labels. They may contain names, dates or other information that helps identify the recording.

  2. Rearranging an organised collection. Keep numbered reels in their existing order wherever possible.

  3. Assuming every reel uses the same recording speed. Reel-to-reel recordings can differ, and speed may even change during a tape.

  4. Testing valuable tapes repeatedly on unverified equipment. If you are uncertain about either the machine or tape condition, unnecessary playback may not be the best first step.

  5. Keeping CD as the only copy of something irreplaceable. A CD is convenient for listening, but important recordings are better protected when additional digital copies are stored separately.

  6. Discarding the original reel after transfer. Keeping the analogue original preserves another source should it ever be required again.

For wider advice on safeguarding ageing family media alongside new digital copies, our practical guide to preserving old media covers sensible long-term preservation steps.

More Questions About this Format

A: Attempting to convert reel-to-reel tapes to CD at home can easily lead to issues such as tape damage, poor sound capture, or incomplete recordings. Consumer-grade equipment often lacks the precision required for accurate playback and digitisation. At Supaphoto, we use advanced audio technology and professional handling techniques to safely convert your reel-to-reel recordings into high-quality digital files before producing expertly mastered CDs. This ensures your memories are preserved without risk or loss of quality.

A: While it’s technically possible to convert reel-to-reel tapes yourself, it’s rarely practical or effective without specialised equipment. Standard consumer tools often can’t accommodate the different speeds, sizes, and track formats of these tapes. Supaphoto’s professional systems are designed to handle all reel-to-reel variations, ensuring every recording is accurately transferred and optimised for CD playback.

A: Home conversion setups tend to rely on outdated players and low-quality recording devices, which often produce distorted, uneven, or incomplete audio. Supaphoto’s technicians use precision-calibrated machines and cleaning systems to align, stabilise, and play your tapes correctly. This professional process eliminates common playback issues and delivers polished, high-fidelity results that are difficult to achieve with DIY methods.

A: Professional services such as Supaphoto prioritise the safety of your recordings throughout the entire process. Our technicians handle every tape with care, using tested techniques to minimise wear and prevent damage. DIY approaches, on the other hand, often involve trial and error, which increases the risk of permanent loss. Entrusting your tapes to professionals ensures that they remain protected while being expertly converted to CD.

A: Although do-it-yourself methods may appear cheaper initially, they often come with hidden costs such as purchasing equipment, learning new software, or accidentally damaging irreplaceable tapes. Supaphoto’s professional reel-to-reel to CD conversion service starts from just £14.99, offering a reliable, high-quality result without the risks or added expenses of DIY experimentation.

A: Yes, damaged or fragile reel-to-reel tapes can often still be converted, but they require special handling. Attempting this at home can easily worsen their condition. Supaphoto’s experienced technicians use professional-grade equipment to repair and stabilise older tapes before digitising them. This process preserves the content in pristine CD format, extending the life of your original recordings.

A: The quality of a reel-to-reel conversion largely depends on the condition of the original tape. While basic home methods may capture usable sound from newer tapes, older or degraded ones need the precision of professional tools. Supaphoto maximises the potential of every recording, using advanced audio restoration techniques to produce the clearest and most accurate CD version possible.

A: Supaphoto can convert your reel-to-reel recordings to CD, USB, or MP3, depending on your preference. DIY conversions are often limited to a single format and may suffer from inconsistent quality. Our professional systems ensure compatibility across modern devices while maintaining the warmth and depth of the original analogue sound. This gives you both flexibility and confidence in the final product.

A: Converting reel-to-reel tapes at home can be a lengthy and frustrating process, often taking several hours per reel. Supaphoto’s professional workflow makes this significantly more efficient. Most conversions are completed within a day of receiving your tapes, and we typically return both your original reels and CDs within a week. You’ll enjoy faster turnaround times with guaranteed professional quality.

A: At Supaphoto, we use top-tier reel-to-reel players and precision-aligned audio equipment to ensure crystal-clear transfers. Our process includes expert tape cleaning, careful head alignment, and professional-grade audio capture. Every detail of your recording is digitised with clarity and accuracy before being mastered onto high-quality CDs that preserve the authentic sound of your original tapes.

A: Your original reels are always returned to you once the conversion process is complete. Supaphoto treats every tape as irreplaceable and handles it with extreme care. Unlike DIY setups, which can easily cause physical damage, our professional method ensures your reels are safely processed and returned in the same condition in which they were received.

A: Cleaning the tapes before playback is a crucial step in achieving the best possible results. Dust or debris can interfere with the tape heads and degrade sound quality. Supaphoto’s technicians carefully clean each reel before transfer to prevent distortion and ensure smooth, consistent playback throughout the recording.

A: Far from degrading quality, professional reel-to-reel conversions often enhance it. Supaphoto’s advanced equipment and restoration tools are designed to capture every nuance of the original audio while reducing unwanted hiss or background noise. The end result is a cleaner, more balanced sound that stays true to the character of the original recording.

A: Reel-to-reel tapes naturally deteriorate over time, leading to a gradual loss of sound fidelity or even complete data loss. Converting them to CD ensures these valuable recordings are preserved in a stable, accessible digital format. By transferring them now, you protect your audio heritage before age-related decay can cause permanent damage.

A: Home setups frequently struggle with uneven playback caused by mechanical wear or misaligned tape heads. Supaphoto’s professional tools and technicians can correct these issues, ensuring that the transfer is smooth and free from fluctuations or distortion. The resulting CDs are balanced, clear, and ready for long-term enjoyment.

A: Because reel-to-reel tapes were made in various playback speeds, using the wrong speed can distort pitch and timing. Supaphoto’s experts accurately identify and match the correct playback speed for each tape, ensuring that the digitised version sounds exactly as intended. This level of precision is difficult to achieve with standard home equipment, making professional conversion the most reliable option.
