I was looking for a company that might be able to convert an old VHS video tape that had been sitting in the draw for nearly 38 years but wasn’t sure that anywhere did this kind of work anymore. How wrong was I? Supaphoto proved to be a lifesaver and have managed to not only preserve the video itself but also a very precious and personal memory that was on that tape and in turn created an incredible digital version for me to watch over and over. Top quality old fashioned customer service and I can’t recommend Supaphoto highly enough. Thanks for everything!

I have had excellent service from Supaphoto. They worked hard to retrieve footage from my ancient ciné film. Emile is incredibly knowledge and very good at communicating updates and progress. I don't hesitate in recommending them, and they would definitely be my go-to business for any future film requirements.

I have used Supaphoto for several years and they always surpass my expectations. Phillipe and his team provide a friendly and professional service, having most recently converted some of my cine films from the 1940s into mp4 copies on both an external drive and CD discs. They have continually kept in touch to assist with any queries I have and I would recommend them unreservedly.

I honestly cannot thank Supaphoto enough for the incredible job they have done recovering our old video tapes and cassettes. My mum recently passed away, and having the opportunity to revisit these precious memories of her and our family means more to us than words can ever express. When they sent us a sample and we finally got to watch the footage, it was such an emotional and special experience. Seeing those moments again felt like being given a little piece of our past back, at a time when we needed it most. The care, effort and attention they put into their work are truly commendable. They have done far more than simply recover old tapes; they have helped preserve memories that are now absolutely priceless to us. I am genuinely grateful for their excellent service, professionalism and the care they have taken with something so personal and irreplaceable. I would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking to preserve their family memories. Thank you for helping us hold on to moments that we will treasure for the rest of our lives.

The UK’s Favourite Mini Cassette to Digital Converter

The video alongside introduces our audio conversion service and includes sample transfers, giving you a useful sense of the results we aim to achieve from older recordings. It also shows how mini cassettes can be converted into convenient digital files, making interviews, dictation, family voices and other important recordings easier to listen to and preserve.

Our experienced technicians work in a fully equipped professional studio using pro-grade playback and digitisation equipment. We aim to reproduce each recording faithfully while maintaining, and where the source allows, improving the quality of ageing audio.

Every mini cassette receives a free inspection before transfer. Older tapes can vary considerably in condition, so if a recording does not produce the best achievable result on one machine, we can try alternative playback equipment and transfer methods. This approach helps us recover and digitise most audio recordings, even where the original media presents difficulties.

Where a recording requires additional attention, specialist restoration can also be considered. If your collection contains conventional audio cassettes as well, our cassette to MP3 conversion service provides another convenient digital option.

Recordings can be supplied in a range of modern formats, including MP3, making them easier to play, archive, duplicate and share without continuing to rely on ageing cassette equipment. Supaphoto can also capture other legacy audio formats, including standard cassettes, reel-to-reel recordings, dictaphone tapes and CDs.

If you are dealing with troublesome older media, our guide to jammed or sticky cassette tapes explains some of the problems ageing tape can develop. For broader ideas on protecting older recordings, our audio tape conversion and preservation guide offers further practical guidance.

Before & After Examples - Before You Convert Mini Cassette

Nothing beats reliving old memories but remade for today

At Supaphoto, we take audio quality seriously. Our professional audio digitisation process is designed to extract the very best sound from ageing recordings, whether they are on cassette tapes, reel-to-reel tapes, MiniDiscs, DAT tapes, vinyl records or other analogue formats. Even recordings that are decades old can often be significantly improved.

Using advanced audio restoration technology, we can reduce hiss, crackles, clicks, pops, hum and background noise while enhancing speech clarity, balancing audio levels and restoring warmth and detail to the original recording. Our aim is always to preserve the authentic character of your audio while making it cleaner and more enjoyable to listen to.

For customers who want the highest possible quality, our optional REVIVAL AI audio enhancement service takes restoration even further. Using intelligent AI-powered processing, we can improve voice intelligibility, reduce distortion, separate unwanted background noise and reveal hidden detail that conventional restoration techniques often cannot recover.

Magnetic tapes and vinyl recordings naturally deteriorate over time. Tape hiss increases, recordings can lose clarity, and physical damage or wear may eventually make them impossible to play. Converting your audio to a modern digital format now helps preserve your priceless memories for future generations while making them easy to enjoy, share and store safely.

More Help & Guidance

Mini cassettes can hold recordings that are difficult to replace, including family voices, interviews, dictation and other spoken-word material. Converting them to digital removes the need to rely on ageing cassette equipment and gives you files that are considerably easier to listen to, copy, organise and preserve.

The guidance below explains what to consider before sending your tapes, how the conversion process works and which digital delivery option may suit you best.

Benefits of Choosing a Professional Mini Cassette Conversion Service

Professional digitisation gives you an accessible digital copy while allowing you to keep the original mini cassette. This is particularly useful when recordings are important or when compatible playback equipment is becoming difficult to find.

Using a specialist service also means you do not have to identify every technical characteristic of the cassette yourself. Supaphoto’s experienced technicians can assess the recording and use suitable playback and digitisation equipment.

Once transferred, the audio can be stored on modern media, copied for relatives or colleagues and backed up without repeatedly playing the original tape.

If your collection contains several kinds of analogue recording, our audio tape digitisation service covers a wider range of legacy formats alongside mini cassettes.

For older tapes that have developed physical problems, our audio tape repair service covers recordings that may need additional attention before or during transfer.

How to Place an Order

Start by collecting the mini cassettes you want digitised. Keep each cassette with its original case and any handwritten labels or notes wherever possible. These details may contain names, dates or descriptions that help identify the recording later.

If your collection is already numbered or arranged in a particular order, leave it that way. Maintaining the sequence can be especially important for interviews, meetings or a series of related family recordings.

You do not need to listen to every cassette before ordering. Supaphoto can inspect the recordings as part of the process, and blank tapes or items that cannot be transferred are not charged for.

Your originals are returned after the conversion has been completed.

For questions about sending media, ordering or delivery, our customer frequently asked questions provide additional information. You can also see the additional mini cassette service questions elsewhere on this page.

A Straightforward, No-Fuss Process

You do not need specialist cassette equipment or technical knowledge to have your recordings digitised. Once Supaphoto receives the tapes, our technicians handle the inspection, playback, digital capture and quality checking.

Mini cassettes can contain recordings made at different times and under very different conditions, so each tape needs to be treated as an individual source rather than assuming every cassette will behave identically.

If playback is problematic, alternative equipment can be tried where appropriate to maximise the result. Multi-point quality assurance also forms part of the process.

Once digitised, the recording becomes much easier to access. Instead of finding a compatible mini cassette machine and physically playing the tape, you can use the new file on suitable modern devices.

For more information about protecting analogue recordings before and after digitisation, our guide to preserving older audio tapes explains practical preservation considerations.

Digital Download or USB – What’s Best?

Both options can work well, so the right choice depends mainly on how you prefer to receive and store files.

A digital download is convenient if you are comfortable working with files on a computer. It avoids another physical storage item and makes it easy to create additional copies.

A USB drive provides a tangible copy containing your digitised recordings. It can be useful if you want to keep a collection together or move the files between compatible computers and other devices.

For valuable recordings, whichever option you choose should ideally not become your only copy. Keeping another copy somewhere separate provides additional protection if a drive is lost or a computer fails.

If you are unsure which digital file type is most appropriate, our guide to common audio formats and their uses explains the differences between commonly used digital audio options.

Pricing Guidance

The cost of mini cassette conversion can depend on the number of tapes and the amount of recorded material they contain. Two cassettes that look identical externally may not contain the same amount of audio.

You do not need to play every tape beforehand simply to establish whether it contains anything. Supaphoto does not charge for blank tapes or items that cannot be transferred.

Keeping labels and cases with the cassettes can also help when larger batches are processed, particularly if the collection contains several similar-looking recordings.

If a cassette appears damaged, jammed or reluctant to play, avoid repeatedly testing it simply to identify the contents. Specialist assessment is preferable to forcing an uncertain tape through unsuitable equipment.

Our guide to jammed and sticky cassette tapes explains some of the problems that can affect ageing magnetic tape.

Understanding Mini Cassettes and Digital Audio

A mini cassette is an analogue magnetic recording format. Digitisation converts the sound stored on the tape into a digital file that can be accessed without relying on the original cassette mechanism.

FeatureMini CassetteDigital Audio
Recording mediumMagnetic tapeDigital file
PlaybackRequires compatible cassette equipmentCompatible modern digital device
AccessCassette must be physically playedFile can be opened directly
CopyingRequires another playback or transferDigital copies can be created easily
SharingPhysical media must be transportedFiles can be duplicated and shared
OrganisationDepends mainly on labels and casesFiles can be named and arranged
BackupRequires another physical or digital copyMultiple copies can be maintained
OriginalRemains the analogue sourceBecomes the everyday listening copy

The important distinction is that digitisation does not replace the original tape. It creates a much more practical version for everyday listening while allowing you to retain the analogue source.

Mini Cassette Learning Zone

What is the best way to preserve an old mini cassette?

Creating a digital copy means you can listen to the recording without repeatedly using the original tape. Keeping both the original and more than one digital copy provides a sensible preservation approach.

Should I play my tapes before sending them?

Not necessarily. If you do not have reliable equipment, there is little advantage in repeatedly playing an unknown tape simply to identify what is on it.

Are mini cassettes and micro cassettes the same?

No. They are different cassette formats and require suitable playback equipment. If you also have the smaller format, our micro cassette conversion service covers those recordings separately.

What if the recording sounds poor?

The achievable result depends on what remains on the original tape. Professional transfer aims to capture the recording faithfully, and additional restoration may be appropriate for some problem recordings.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Discarding cases and labels. These may contain the only useful information about the date, people or subject of a recording.

  2. Mixing up an organised collection. Keep numbered tapes in their existing sequence before sending them for conversion.

  3. Confusing mini cassettes with micro cassettes. They are separate formats and should be identified correctly when possible.

  4. Forcing a troublesome tape to play. Repeated attempts on unreliable equipment can be unhelpful if the cassette is already showing problems.

  5. Keeping only one digital copy. Important recordings are better protected when duplicated and stored in more than one location.

  6. Throwing away the original after digitisation. The digital file gives you convenient access, but the cassette remains the original recording source.

For wider guidance on safeguarding older recordings and other family media, our guide to archiving important memories explains why preserving both originals and well-managed digital copies is worthwhile.

More Questions About this Format

A: When we digitise your micro cassette, the recording is converted into a standard MP3 or WAV file that can be easily played on any computer. Once the process is complete, we’ll provide your digital files on a USB stick or via direct download.

A: Mini cassettes were small audio tapes used mainly in dictation machines and portable recorders. They look similar to micro cassettes but are slightly larger and offer different sound characteristics. Today, playback devices are rare, so converting mini cassettes to digital is the easiest way to keep your recordings accessible and safe.

A: Technically, yes — but it can be challenging. You’d need a functioning mini cassette recorder, audio interface, recording software, and time to monitor the process in real time. Because these recorders are now difficult to find, most people choose to let a professional service like Supaphoto handle the transfer quickly and safely.

A: Mini cassettes were never meant for long-term storage. Over time, the tape can stretch or lose magnetic integrity, causing sound distortion or dropout. That’s why converting them to digital now is the best way to preserve your recordings before they fade away.

A: We start by carefully inspecting and cleaning your mini cassettes to ensure the tape runs smoothly. Then, using professional-grade playback equipment, we transfer the audio in real time and convert it into high-quality digital files such as MP3 or WAV. Each recording is monitored by our technicians for clarity and balance before being saved to your chosen format — USB, CD, or digital download.

A: Each cassette is handled by trained technicians in a clean, static-free environment. We store all media in clearly labelled cases and return every original tape along with your converted files.

A: Absolutely. Thousands of customers mail us their tapes every year. We recommend wrapping each cassette in soft padding and placing them in a sturdy box. Once we receive them, we log each item and confirm its safe arrival.

A: Prices start from as little as £5.99 per tape, depending on quantity and the level of restoration you choose. Larger orders qualify for discounted rates, and all prices include VAT and careful return shipping.

A: Yes. Our playback systems are designed to handle delicate tapes gently. Before digitisation, we check for issues like wrinkling or residue buildup, which can be cleaned and corrected to ensure the best transfer possible.

A: We’ve digitised thousands of mini cassettes over the years and understand the quirks of this unique format. Many home players can distort or damage fragile tapes, but our professional equipment captures every nuance safely. We also offer optional sound restoration to reduce hiss and improve clarity, ensuring your recordings sound as clean and clear as possible.
