I needed two VHS and one Hi8 camcorder tape converted to digital format and I'm glad I found Supaphoto. What made me choose the company were the excellent reviews. I got an extremely fast response to my initial query and I was greeted by very friendly staff when I dropped my tapes off at the studio, and I was also very impressed with all of their specialised equipment they had. I wasn't looking for either the cheapest or quickest service but I was looking for a high quality service and Supaphoto are one of the few companies around that offer both excellent customer service and a high quality service. I look forward to using them again in the future which I certainly will be doing as I have more videos to convert plus some very old 1940s family photographs I'd like digitizing.

I've just had eight reels of childhood memories digitised from old 8mm film. The service and speed of Supaphoto is second to none. Friendly, fast, and focused on quality. I didn't even get to see the first run. It failed the quality standards and Supaphoto created a better version at no cost to me. I highly recommend Supaphoto.

A fantastic job. Recently widowed and found old slides of my husband. I was concerned about sending them off but needn't have worried. Great results and nice to have such a personal service. It's not easy these days to find a company like this that actually talks to you! Thank you so much.

I entrusted Supaphoto with preserving my entire family archive of over 2,500 assets. The project included loose prints, 35mm slides, mouldy VHS tape restoration, and full photo album scanning. They worked quickly and carefully, completing this massive undertaking in under three months. I was thrilled to receive high-quality JPEG and TIFF image scans alongside AVI and MPEG video files, all meticulously organised into dated folders exactly as I requested. Most importantly, my original media was handled with the utmost care and returned safely and securely. Supaphoto is truly the best in the business, offering an invaluable service for preserving a lifetime of memories. Highly recommended! Thank you.

The UK’s Favourite Reel to Reel to Digital Converter

The video alongside gives you an introduction to our professional audio conversion service and includes sample transfers, so you can hear the results for yourself. At Supaphoto, we carefully convert old reel-to-reel recordings and other analogue audio into modern digital formats, helping preserve voices, music and important family recordings for the future.

Our experienced technicians work in a fully equipped professional studio using pro-grade digitisation equipment selected to achieve the best possible results from each recording. We aim for faithful reproduction of the original sound while maintaining, and where possible improving, the listening quality of ageing recordings.

Every tape receives a free inspection before transfer. Because older recordings can vary considerably in age, condition and recording quality, we adapt our approach accordingly. If a recording does not transfer satisfactorily on the first attempt, we can try alternative machines and playback methods to maximise the quality of the final result. Most recordings can be successfully digitised and recovered irrespective of their condition.

For recordings requiring additional work, our professional audio restoration service can help improve problematic audio and make valuable recordings easier to enjoy again.

We can digitise a wide range of audio media, including reel-to-reel tapes, standard audio cassettes, dictaphone tapes and CDs. Your recordings can be supplied in convenient modern formats, including MP3, making them much easier to listen to, archive, copy and share with family.

Our studio-quality capture process also provides a dependable digital master for long-term archiving and future reproduction. If you are wondering whether older reels should be transferred sooner rather than later, our guide to how reel-to-reel tapes age over time explains the factors that can affect stored magnetic tape.

What you can Expect From Us & Our Advantages

Sending irreplaceable reel-to-reel recordings away for digitisation requires trust. At Supaphoto, we make the process straightforward from the moment your recordings arrive until your originals and new digital copies are returned.

Your reels are hand-digitised here in the UK by experienced technicians, with multi-point quality assurance throughout the process. We keep batches together and recordings in their original order, helping ensure larger collections remain properly organised. You will also receive updates and order tracking for added peace of mind.

With more than 20 years of trusted experience and over 600 genuine five-star customer service reviews, Supaphoto also supports museums, institutions, television production companies and programmes, including the BBC’s The Repair Shop. Our approach combines professional digitisation with good old-fashioned customer service: if you need help, you can speak to a real person.

We offer a fast turnaround and a simple, no-fuss process. There is no charge for blank tapes or items we cannot transfer, and your original recordings are returned to you. For customers with mixed collections, our wider professional audio tape digitisation service covers several types of legacy audio media.

Digital recordings can be supplied on preloaded USBs and compatible digital photo frames, with optional cloud hosting for convenient access and storage. There are no hidden annual cloud-storage subscription charges. If you are deciding how best to organise your files, our guide to digital audio formats provides useful background, while our audio tape inspiration and conversion guide explores what can be preserved from older recordings.

For further practical guidance, our audio preservation resource centre brings together information about digitising, protecting and enjoying older audio collections.

We are really proud to be an ongoing technical partner to the TV Production Company behind for the BBC’s Repair Shop and have worked on multiple programmes.

Before & After Examples - Before You Convert Reel to Reel Tapes

Nothing beats reliving old memories but remade for today

At Supaphoto, we take audio quality seriously. Our professional audio digitisation process is designed to extract the very best sound from ageing recordings, whether they are on cassette tapes, reel-to-reel tapes, MiniDiscs, DAT tapes, vinyl records or other analogue formats. Even recordings that are decades old can often be significantly improved.

Using advanced audio restoration technology, we can reduce hiss, crackles, clicks, pops, hum and background noise while enhancing speech clarity, balancing audio levels and restoring warmth and detail to the original recording. Our aim is always to preserve the authentic character of your audio while making it cleaner and more enjoyable to listen to.

For customers who want the highest possible quality, our optional REVIVAL AI audio enhancement service takes restoration even further. Using intelligent AI-powered processing, we can improve voice intelligibility, reduce distortion, separate unwanted background noise and reveal hidden detail that conventional restoration techniques often cannot recover.

Magnetic tapes and vinyl recordings naturally deteriorate over time. Tape hiss increases, recordings can lose clarity, and physical damage or wear may eventually make them impossible to play. Converting your audio to a modern digital format now helps preserve your priceless memories for future generations while making them easy to enjoy, share and store safely.

More Help & Guidance

Old reel-to-reel tapes can contain recordings that exist nowhere else: family voices, music, interviews, performances or other personal material. The guidance below explains what to consider when having reel-to-reel tapes converted to digital, from choosing an output format to preparing an order and avoiding common mistakes.

Benefits of Choosing a Professional Reel-to-Reel Transfer Service

Reel-to-reel audio is not simply a case of putting a tape onto any available machine and pressing play. Different recordings and tapes can require appropriate playback equipment and careful handling, particularly when the material has been stored for decades.

Professional conversion provides a practical way to preserve the contents of ageing analogue tapes in a format that is much easier to access, copy and store. It also avoids relying on an old reel-to-reel machine whenever you want to hear a recording.

Supaphoto’s experienced technicians handle the digitisation process in the UK and can assess recordings before transfer. If your collection contains other types of analogue audio alongside open-reel tapes, our audio tape digitisation options explain the wider range of recordings we can handle.

For recordings that have deteriorated or need additional attention, specialist audio restoration may also be appropriate.

How to Place an Order

Start by gathering the reels you would like digitised. Where possible, leave any existing labels, boxes and handwritten information with them. These details may help identify individual recordings and maintain the order of a collection.

You can then place your order and send or bring your tapes to Supaphoto for processing. We inspect the media before transfer and keep batches organised throughout the digitisation process. Your original reels are returned after the work has been completed.

If you are uncertain about what you have, there is no need to identify every technical detail yourself before making an enquiry. Reel sizes, recording contents and other characteristics can be assessed as part of the process.

For questions specific to ordering, turnaround, media or delivery, see our frequently asked questions or the additional reel-to-reel service questions further down this page.

A Straightforward Process from Reel to Digital

Converting an old audio collection should not require you to become an expert in analogue recording technology. Supaphoto’s service is designed to make the process straightforward: you provide the original recordings, we handle the technical conversion, and you receive accessible digital versions together with your originals.

Your recordings are handled individually, with batches and recording order maintained. Quality assurance forms part of the workflow, and if a recording presents a problem, different equipment can be used where appropriate to obtain the best possible transfer.

Digitisation also removes the inconvenience of setting up vintage equipment simply to hear a family recording. Once converted, files can be stored, backed up and enjoyed using modern devices.

If you are interested in the equipment and history behind your recordings, our guide to the reel-to-reel tape recorder and how it developed provides useful background.

Digital Download or USB – What’s Best?

Neither option is automatically better; the most suitable choice depends on how you intend to use your recordings.

A digital download is convenient if you are comfortable managing files on computers or other devices. You can create additional backups and distribute copies without needing to pass a physical USB drive between family members.

A USB drive provides a tangible copy that can be useful for people who prefer keeping their digitised recordings together on physical storage. Files can still be copied from the USB onto computers and other compatible devices.

Whichever method you prefer, good digital preservation practice means keeping more than one copy of anything irreplaceable. Avoid treating a single USB drive, computer or cloud account as your only archive.

Our guide to archiving important memories explains why creating suitable digital copies is only the beginning of long-term preservation.

Pricing Guidance for Reel-to-Reel Conversion

The cost of reel-to-reel digitisation can depend on the characteristics of the material being transferred, so it is useful to know what is actually in your collection before assuming a final price.

Reels can differ in size and the amount of recorded material they contain. A box or reel label can provide useful clues, but handwritten descriptions should not necessarily be treated as a definitive account of the contents.

Supaphoto offers a free inspection before transfer, allowing the recordings to be assessed rather than expecting customers to understand the technical details themselves. Blank tapes or recordings that cannot be transferred are not charged for.

If you have several reels, keeping them in their existing boxes and original sequence makes assessment easier and helps preserve the context of a collection. For broader practical information about having older recordings transferred, our guide to professional audio tape conversion covers further points to consider.

Understanding Reel-to-Reel and Digital Audio

Reel-to-reel is an analogue magnetic recording format. Digitisation converts the recorded audio into a digital file, allowing the content to be used without repeatedly playing the original tape.

FeatureReel-to-Reel TapeDigital Audio
Recording mediumMagnetic tape on an open reelDigital file
PlaybackRequires suitable reel-to-reel equipmentCompatible modern digital device
AccessPhysical tape must be loaded and playedFiles can be accessed directly
CopyingRequires another recording processDigital copies can be created easily
SharingOriginal media is difficult to shareFiles can be duplicated and distributed
StorageRequires physical storage spaceCan be stored on digital media
BackupRequires another physical or digital copyMultiple digital backups can be maintained

If MP3 is your preferred output, our dedicated reel-to-reel MP3 conversion service provides more specific information about that option.

Reel-to-Reel Audio Learning Zone

Should I play an old reel before sending it for conversion?
If you do not know the condition of an old tape or playback machine, there is little benefit in repeatedly playing it simply to identify the contents. Existing labels and notes can instead be kept with the reel for assessment.

What happens to my original tapes?
Digitisation creates new digital versions of the recordings; your original reels are returned to you. You can therefore retain the physical originals as part of your family or historical archive.

Should I keep my reels after digitisation?
If the recordings are important, retaining the originals provides an additional source alongside your new digital copies. How they are subsequently stored can also matter. Our guidance on preserving old audio tapes covers practical considerations for looking after analogue recordings.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Discarding labels and boxes. Handwritten notes can provide valuable context about dates, people, events and recording contents.

  2. Changing the order of a collection. If reels have been deliberately numbered or arranged, keep them in that sequence when preparing them for digitisation.

  3. Relying on one digital copy. Keep important recordings in more than one location rather than depending entirely on a single USB drive or computer.

  4. Assuming an unlabelled reel is blank. Lack of labelling does not establish what is recorded on a tape, so potentially important reels should be assessed before being discarded.

  5. Repeatedly testing questionable tapes on old equipment. If the condition of the recording or machine is uncertain, unnecessary playback may not be the best way to investigate valuable material.

Professional digitisation gives you a practical way to preserve the content of reel-to-reel recordings while retaining the originals and making those recordings considerably easier to access, protect and share.

More Questions About this Format

A: Converting reel-to-reel tapes to CD at home can lead to several problems, including tape damage from improper handling or outdated playback equipment. DIY conversions also tend to suffer from poor sound quality due to uncalibrated devices and low-grade audio interfaces. A professional service like Supaphoto ensures your reel-to-reel tapes are digitised using precision equipment, preserving every detail of your recording and transferring it safely to high-quality CDs or digital files.

A: While it’s technically possible to convert reel-to-reel tapes yourself, the results rarely match professional standards. Consumer tools generally lack the precision to manage different tape speeds, sizes, and track formats. Supaphoto uses industry-leading reel-to-reel to CD conversion systems to capture each recording with full clarity and tonal accuracy, giving you a result that far exceeds what’s possible with home equipment.

A: DIY reel-to-reel conversions often rely on outdated or low-quality players, which can produce distorted, muffled, or incomplete recordings. Supaphoto’s professional technicians use calibrated playback machines with aligned tape heads to ensure clean, accurate sound reproduction. Our reel-to-reel digitisation process eliminates noise and distortion, delivering a polished and professional-quality audio transfer every time.

A: Yes, when using a trusted service like Supaphoto, your reel-to-reel tapes are handled with exceptional care. DIY attempts often involve trial-and-error methods that risk damaging delicate tape reels. Our experienced team uses precision tools and controlled playback systems to protect your recordings during the entire reel-to-reel to digital conversion process, ensuring they remain intact and secure.

A: Although home conversions might seem cheaper at first, they often come with hidden costs—such as buying new equipment or losing valuable recordings due to mistakes. Supaphoto offers affordable reel-to-reel transfer to CD and digital file services starting from just £14.99, giving you expert results at a cost-effective price. Our service provides peace of mind, professional quality, and zero risk of tape damage.

A: Yes, even damaged reel-to-reel tapes can be digitised, but they require careful handling and the right restoration tools. Attempting to repair or play them yourself can make the damage worse. Supaphoto’s expert technicians are trained in tape repair and stabilisation, using professional-grade decks to restore and transfer fragile or deteriorated recordings safely to CD or USB.

A: Yes, the final sound quality depends on the condition of the original tape, but professional services can often recover and enhance even aged or degraded recordings. Supaphoto’s advanced reel-to-reel digitisation equipment reduces noise and restores clarity, achieving far better results than typical DIY conversions. For older or damaged tapes, our restoration process ensures you get the best possible outcome.

A: Professional services like Supaphoto offer flexible output options, including reel-to-reel to MP3, USB, and CD conversions. Home setups are usually limited by hardware and can’t produce the same consistency or compatibility. With Supaphoto, you can choose the format that best suits your needs, from modern digital files for easy sharing to archival-quality CDs for long-term storage.

A: DIY conversion of reel-to-reel tapes can be extremely time-consuming, especially for long recordings or multiple reels. Supaphoto handles the process efficiently, using automated and professional-grade systems to save you hours of work. Most reel-to-reel to CD conversions are completed within 1–2 days of receiving your tapes, and both your originals and digital copies are returned within about a week.

A: Supaphoto uses high-end reel-to-reel players, precision alignment tools, and digital mastering software to deliver unmatched sound quality. Each recording is cleaned, stabilised, and transferred through our professional-grade workstations, ensuring that every tone and detail is faithfully preserved in the final CD or digital file.

A: Yes, we can combine multiple reels into one CD or USB, or separate them into individual tracks according to your preference. DIY methods often lack the tools and expertise to do this accurately. Supaphoto’s reel-to-reel to digital service ensures your recordings are professionally organised and seamlessly compiled for convenient listening and playback.

A: When you use Supaphoto, your original reel-to-reel tapes are always returned in the same condition they were received. Unlike DIY methods, which can easily damage tapes through mishandling or worn-out players, our professionals use specialist equipment that treats your recordings with complete care throughout the conversion process.

A: No, the sound quality will not degrade — in fact, it often improves. Supaphoto’s reel-to-reel audio transfer process enhances clarity and reduces hiss, hum, and background noise. We use state-of-the-art technology to ensure that your digitised recordings sound as vibrant and clean as possible, preserving the warmth of the original analogue sound while making it crystal-clear in digital form.

A: Reel-to-reel tapes naturally deteriorate over time, making reel-to-reel to CD conversion an essential step in preserving your audio heritage. Magnetic tape can lose fidelity, become brittle, or even break. Supaphoto captures your recordings before they degrade further, ensuring they’re permanently preserved in a modern, durable format for future generations.

A: DIY equipment often struggles with uneven playback, speed fluctuations, or tangled reels, which can cause irreversible damage. Supaphoto’s professional-grade tools and experienced engineers ensure smooth, consistent playback and accurate sound reproduction, protecting your tapes during the reel-to-reel digitisation process.

A: Yes, reel-to-reel tapes were produced in various playback speeds, and selecting the wrong one can distort the pitch and timing of your recordings. Supaphoto’s technicians are trained to identify and apply the correct playback speed for every reel, guaranteeing that your reel-to-reel to digital transfer sounds exactly as it did when first recorded.

You can then choose how you’d like your digital recordings delivered — on CD, USB stick, or external hard drive if you have a larger number of files. This gives you full flexibility to enjoy, share, and back up your recordings easily on modern devices, while keeping the warmth and authenticity of the original reel sound.

A: Yes, we can transfer tape labels for free.
If your reels have labels or written titles, we’ll include those names (up to 20 characters per label) on your digital files at no extra cost. This makes it simple to identify and organise your recordings once they’ve been digitised.

A: Yes, you’ll always get your original reels back.
After your reel to digital conversion is complete, we’ll return all your original tapes along with your new digital files, safely packaged to ensure they arrive in perfect condition. A: Yes, we can repair damaged or torn reel tapes.
If your reel-to-reel tapes are broken or have tears, we can restore them before digitising. For an additional £15.00 per tape, we’ll repair up to three tape breaks and prepare them for smooth playback. Our technicians are experienced in handling fragile, aged reels, ensuring the highest possible sound quality during the digitisation process.
