Super 8 to Digital

Some History on Super 8 film

Super 8 film was first introduced to the world in 1965 as a revolutionary upgrade on Standard 8mm, with smaller sprocket holes and bigger frames that produced sharper images.

It was cheaper and handier than previous formats, prompting more and more people to use it. By the 1970s, before the arrival of camcorders, Super 8 was massively popular. Specially designed to be user-friendly, it came in light-proof cartridges you could easily load into your camera, which eliminated the need to thread film. Almost overnight, it became the choice of home movie enthusiasts everywhere.

People recorded all the special moments in their lives on Super 8: it might have been a fun family visit to Disneyland or a graduation ceremony at one of the UK’s then brand-new universities. There again, you could also capture your family group in their Morris Marina crossing the Channel to go on holiday, baby’s first faltering steps, or dads dancing at weddings in shirts with colossal collars. It all made for very happy memories.

Sending your film off to be processed became part of the ritual.  When it came back in the post, families used to sit down together, looking on in wonder as they watched the footage playback via a projector and screen amid mounting excitement and laughter. There was nothing like seeing your friends and family come alive in Kodachrome.

Super 8 Film Conversion

Sadly, as a format Super 8 is now outmoded and well past its sell-by date. Not many of us have an 8mm projector and screen standing by anymore and it’s become much harder to share your Super 8 memories with the people you love.

But all is not lost. If you want your memories to last, all you need to do is get in touch with Supaphoto and have us convert your Super 8 to digital using our dedicated HD film scanner – our high quality film converter which will create a digital file.

Before you convert super 8 to digital video though, consider your preferred output choice – i.e uploading our cloud service (typically as a file format called mp4), on a memory stick (not so much sd card nowadays)

These days, if you find a box with old reels of Super 8 under the bed, you might notice the film has started to degrade and break down. Old films were never designed to last forever so converting to digital video makes a lot of sense.

The film itself becomes brittle with time and, when you open the box, a tell-tale, musty smell like vinegar lets you know it’s no longer in a good way. You don’t have much time before it degrades further. The clock is ticking.

Super 8 Scanning

Once you send your Super 8 in to us, the first thing we do is give your footage a health check. Old film can be a bit grainy and scratched, but if it’s professionally cleaned, with the removal of unwanted dust and hair, it will immediately look a whole lot brighter and better.

Using a high-quality digital conversion system operated by skilled technicians who pay attention to every little detail, we’ll restore your film to its past glory with full-frame scanning, colour correction and enhancement as well as speed adjustment for pleasurable, flicker-free viewing.

Whatever condition your film arrives in, Supaphoto will help spruce it up until it’s looking its best again. You’ll be amazed at the results.

Highest quality home movies

We treat each frame with care. If your film has lost its original tints – over time colour tends to shift towards magenta and red – we’ll bring its images vividly back to life with scene-by-scene colour correction. Our aim is to recreate a digital image for every frame of the film with painstaking accuracy.

Taking advantage of the years of experience gained from converting every kind of film media to digital, we offer you the very best in super 8 to digital image correction and enhancement. Rest assured, the process will be gentle on your original film and won’t damage a single frame.

Convert Super 8 to DVD or MP4

When we encode and convert Super 8 to digital, we pride ourselves on always going the extra mile to improve the quality of the picture. Using meticulously calibrated transfer systems, we can convert Super 8 to any format you wish, which we will supply to you along with your original film. It can be outputted to a wide range of formats or simply sent to you on a USB memory stick.

The versatility of digital is what makes it so wonderful. It’s compatible with all modern devices, including phones, lap-tops and home computers. You’ll scratch your head at why anybody ever came up with the idea of a screen and projector in the first place.

Standard 8 with Sound?
Not sure if our cine film has sound. Well don’t worry. Super 8mm cine film with a magnetic soundtrack might represent very little of the footage out there but we can help you here too..

Cine film to DVD

It’s particularly emotional watching moving images of people back in the days when everyone looked so much younger as all the old memories come flooding back, especially when you’re watching with members of your family. The experience is so involving. Few things can bring a family together in the same way.

The moment your Super 8 film is transferred onto digital format, your memories will be safe and sound for the foreseeable future. The more copies there are floating around, the greater the peace of mind you will have. And when you digitise your old cine film, you might want to order additional copies of DVDs because they make such wonderful and unexpected gifts for friends and family.

Super 8 has a singular charm all of its own, which it retains on digital. And that’s why it’s time to protect your memories forever by converting your old cine film to a new format. You’ll get the very best of both worlds and your memories will be preserved forever.
