Understanding the Format

What does processing 8mm film mean?

Processing develops the chemically recorded image after the film has been exposed in a camera. Before this stage, the pictures usually cannot be seen or scanned normally.

Is processing the same as digitising?

No. Processing creates the visible image on the physical film. Digitising then scans that developed film to create a modern video file.

Can very old exposed film still be developed?

Sometimes, but the outcome depends on the stock, age, storage conditions and original exposure. Ageing film can produce colour changes, fogging, reduced contrast or no usable image.

What is Super 8 film?

Film Cleaning and Restoration

Do not use water, household cleaning sprays, furniture polish or general-purpose solvents. These can leave deposits, soften the image layer or create permanent marks. Developed film with weak joins, mould or brittleness may require specialist preparation before scanning.

Digital restoration takes place after capture. Depending on the service selected and the quality of the source, it may help improve colour balance, stability, contrast or visible noise. Wetgate Film Scanning

Wetgate scanning is an optional capture method used to reduce the visibility of certain scratches and surface marks on developed cine film. A specialist liquid temporarily fills some abrasions while the film passes through the scanning gate, helping light travel through the affected area more evenly.

This method may improve footage with base-side scratches, but it does not repair the physical film. Deep emulsion damage, severe fading, poor focus and incorrect exposure will still affect the image. Wetgate is therefore best viewed as a targeted enhancement rather than a guaranteed cure.

It is not part of the chemical development stage and can only be considered after processing has produced a stable physical film. Never apply liquids at home, as unsuitable products or uncontrolled handling may cause staining, contamination or further damage.

5K Film Scanning

A 5K scan captures a detailed master from the developed film, retaining more of the information present in each frame than a lower-resolution transfer. This can be useful for important family footage, archive projects, restoration or future editing.

Resolution alone cannot transform weak source material. The final result remains influenced by the original camera lens, focus, exposure, film stock, development and storage history. Nevertheless, a detailed scan can provide greater flexibility for image stabilisation, colour work and producing different viewing copies.

High-resolution masters also require more storage space. Many customers therefore retain a large archival file alongside a smaller version intended for everyday watching and sharing. This combination protects the detailed capture while keeping the footage easy to use on ordinary devices.
