The History and Evolution of Common Video Formats

Sony produced an assortment of business Betamax products, a Beta I-only format for industrial and institutional consumers. This was essentially less expensive and cumbersome than U-Matic. The influx of the Betacam system lowered the need for both Industrial Beta and U-Matic hardware.

In addition, Betamax had a considerable role to play in the music recording business, when Sony unveiled its PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) digital recording model as an encoding box/PCM adaptor that could be linked to a Betamax recorder. The Sony PCM-F1 adaptor was distributed with a accompanying Betamax VCR SL-2000 as a portable digital sound recording system. Numerous sound engineers utilised this system in the 80s and 90s to produce their primary digital master recordings.

Initially, Sony managed to tout several Betamax-only characteristics, like BetaScan—a rapid image search in either direction—and BetaSkipScan, a method that enabled the user to see where he was on the tape by pushing the fast forwards button (or rewind, if in that mode): the transport would shift into the BetaScan mode until the button was pushed back out. Sony thought that the M-Load transports employed by VHS recorders made replicating these gimmicks unachievable. BetaSkipScan (Peep Search) is now possible on mini M-load formats, but even Sony was powerless to completely copy this on VHS. BetaScan was initially called "Videola" until the firm that developed the Moviola warned that they’d bring legal action.
