Whichever option suits you, consider keeping more than one copy of irreplaceable recordings. Digital conversion makes copying much easier, but no single hard drive, USB device or computer should be treated as permanent storage. Understanding PAL and NTSC

PAL and NTSC were television standards used in different parts of the world. This explains why a tape that physically fits into a UK video recorder may not necessarily play correctly if it was recorded for another television system.

The important distinction is that PAL and NTSC describe video standards, not the physical tape itself. A VHS cassette, for example, may contain a PAL or NTSC recording. Correctly identifying and playing the recorded standard is therefore part of achieving a successful transfer.

Why won’t an NTSC tape play properly on my UK video recorder?
