An Introduction to Photos

Over the years, since photography was invented and evolved, there have been different types of photos and different formats. You might have different variations lying around at home such as photo albums, a box full of negatives, or your pictures hanging on the wall. Here’s a quick history lesson and a few facts about the different types of photos and all types of photographs. Best thing to is take some free consultation for the UK’s #1 slide digitisation service!

Print Photos

Back in the late 1820s, a French inventor named Joseph Nicephore Niepce took the first official photograph. Since then, photography has progressed and developed in more ways than one. For example in the 1870s, the gelatin silver process. These types of photos were invented by Richard Leach Maddox with substantial improvements made by Charles Harper

Polaroids

In 1948 the polaroid hit the market and it was a tremendous hit because people could take photos and not have to wait to get their film developed. They’d get their photos almost instantly.  Polaroids were invented by an American inventor and scientist called Edwin H. Land. He is the co-founder of the polaroid company

Photo Types – Negatives

Negatives are those little brown strips of film that usually come with your developed prints. Those are where developed prints come from. For all you know you might have a box of negatives that haven’t been developed and if you do, who knows what kind of precious memories you’ll discover and unlock when you do get them developed.  Negatives are considered amongst the most mysterious of photo types for this reason. Joseph Nicephore Niepce also invented negatives in the 1820s in an age where you could have scarcely imagined the different photo types that followed. Now, this technology has advanced so that you can digitise negatives.

Types of Photos – Slides

Slides (also known as transparencies) were introduced in the 1930s, – they were predominantly used in 35mm film cameras. They were also a big hit at academic facilities as they used 35mm slide projectors a lot. 35mm as a format was popularised by amateur photographers.

The first SLR35 mm camera was invented in 1936 by Oskar Barnack

Photo Types – Digital Photos

Can you believe digital photos have been around since the 1950s? Today it feels like a new concept that would’ve come in during the very early 2000s but not at all!

In 1957 the first digital photo (which was black and white at the time) was put through a computer by a man called Russel Kirsch – it must have been an amazing day. Nowadays, digital photography and prints are almost synonymous. Once digitalised, it becomes easier to share and safeguard the images too.

Digital photography has been taken over from our smartphones nowadays. On an everyday basis, this is how we seamlessly document memories and it’s a core part of our society in this day and age of social media.
