Dedicated Photo Album Scanning Process and Equipment

See for Yourself - Before and After Example

For the public and museums alike, we employ a range of expensive dedicated technology for people photo album collections to help achieve the best possible results. This includes museum grade scans of each page to begin with. It’s a slow process and we even often re-scan certain pages to get the best of results.

There are many permutations that we have lots of experience with. An example would be ring-bound albums where we typically extract the pages and reassemble then to ensure best results. Another issue which way are used to handling is the case of loose photographs falling out and different images requiring different treatment. For this we employ other dedicated machines and settings. Finally, when the scanning is completed, we often (at our cost) apply extra optional post processing treatment to obtain the very best outcomes and experience for our customers. See a before and after example of one image below.

Photo Album Digitalisation - In More Depth

Preserving Family Albums with Careful Digital Archiving
Family albums often represent years of thoughtful organisation and storytelling. Photographs were placed deliberately, sometimes accompanied by handwritten notes, postcards, or ticket stubs that add context to the memories captured. Protecting these collections digitally allows families to continue enjoying them while safeguarding fragile originals from fading, handling, and environmental damage.

Supaphoto processes thousands of album pages every year, carefully maintaining the original order created by families. Each project focuses on returning albums exactly as they were received while producing a structured digital archive that reflects the same page sequence and layout. This approach ensures the story told within the album remains intact while providing convenient digital access to the images.

Albums can be delivered through local partner studios, sent via post, or collected through a doorstep pickup service. These options allow families across the UK to preserve their collections easily while keeping the process secure and convenient.

Types of Albums That Can Be Digitised

Albums appear in many formats, and each requires careful handling to ensure both the photographs and the book itself remain unharmed. Some albums use magnetic or sticky pages, while others contain traditional paper pages with photographs glued directly into place.

Scrapbooks are another common format, often using photo corner mounts or decorative layouts. These albums may also include layered items such as postcards, tickets, and handwritten captions. In some cases, pages contain three-dimensional elements that must be captured with particular care.

Plastic sleeve albums are also widely used, storing photographs of different sizes in transparent pockets. Regardless of the format, each album is assessed individually to determine the most appropriate method of digitisation while preserving the original layout of each page.

High-Resolution Image Capture and Quality Standards
Maintaining image clarity is essential when converting albums into digital archives. Most projects are produced at a minimum of 600 DPI, providing significantly more detail than standard printing resolution. This ensures the resulting files retain a high level of visual information and remain suitable for future use, including enlargements or restoration.

Before capturing each page, photographs and equipment are carefully cleaned to minimise dust or particles appearing in the images. Plastic coverings are removed whenever possible to prevent glare or distortion during the capture process.

Once captured, images are cropped, oriented correctly, and optimised for consistent viewing. Each album is then organised into its own folder, ensuring the sequence of photographs mirrors the original order of the pages.

For readers interested in the broader science behind preserving historical photographs, the Library of Congress guide to photograph preservation offers valuable insight:

Technology Used for Album Digitisation
Because albums vary greatly in construction, several different technologies may be used depending on the album’s structure and condition. Some albums require overhead systems that allow pages to remain intact while still capturing detailed images.

Flatbed scanners are particularly useful when dealing with tightly bound albums or photographs mounted in corner holders. These systems allow individual images to be captured carefully without damaging the surrounding page.

Professional studio-grade equipment is used to ensure accurate colour reproduction and high image clarity. The method chosen for each album depends on factors such as the binding style, the condition of the photographs, and whether full-page images or individual photographs are required.

Digital Organisation and File Structure
Organising the final archive is just as important as capturing the images themselves. Each album is placed in its own clearly labelled folder, allowing families to navigate their collection easily.

Folders may be arranged chronologically based on dates written on the albums, or they may follow a numerical structure that reflects the original order of the books. If no labels are present, a consistent naming system is applied to ensure the files remain organised.

Additional enhancements can improve the usability of the archive. Captions written in albums can be transcribed and stored within file names or metadata, making them searchable. Faces can be tagged, locations recorded as geo-tags, and approximate dates assigned so images integrate smoothly into modern digital libraries.

Families who wish to protect fragile originals long term may also benefit from learning more about photograph preservation methods to ensure their albums remain safe after digitisation.

Optional Restoration and Enhancement Services
Some albums contain photographs that have faded, discoloured, or suffered minor physical damage over time. Restoration services can improve these images by adjusting colour balance, repairing scratches, and enhancing clarity.

These improvements are usually applied selectively, focusing on images that would benefit most from careful restoration. This approach preserves the authenticity of the album while allowing particularly important photographs to be enhanced for sharing or printing.

In addition, digitised album pages can be reproduced as modern photo books, offering families a convenient way to share copies while protecting the original album from repeated handling.

What Is Album Digitisation?
Album digitisation is the process of converting printed photographs arranged in albums into organised digital files while preserving the original page order and structure.

Steps involved:
1. Assess the album’s format and condition.
2. Capture high-resolution images of pages or individual photographs.
3. Organise files to match the original album sequence.
4. Deliver a structured digital archive ready for viewing and sharing.

Over the years we have scanned a huge variety of photos from photo albums, scrapbooks, postcards, letters, envelopes and various memorabilia including tickets to concerts and sports events. When it comes to precious memories, we’ve seen it all.

Of course, we’ve inherited this love of photos from our parents and we instinctively look to continue the tradition of safeguarding these memories. As studio grade photo scanning technology has developed, rest assured that we have continued to invest heavily in equipment.

So why not rejuvenate your photos to life with our photo scanning service to a digital file on a memory stick for example.

Our affordable photo scanning service gives total peace of mind that you’ve chosen the right scanning company.

We are known for our quick turnaround time and for providing you with a large number of digital photo frames options. We can output to an easy to play and share digital file.

Unlike most of our competitors, we do not automatically add automated dust and scratch removal software effects to the scans because although they sound great, on closer inspection, the software often gets things wrong and makes bad decisions resulting in poor scans on a flatbed scanner.

Finally, don’t forget that we also scan slides and negatives too!

Whatever brand your original photographs were – i.e Kodak, Fuji, Agfa, our focus is always on quality scan and security of handling – so you can rest assured that we’ll take care of your material and photo frames. We’ll scan your slides one by one by hand, returning your slides with full colour restored, including dust & scratch removal where appropriate.

Rest assured that we take the issue of quality very seriously.

Other projects include digitalising Sir Richard Attenborough’s personal collection of images, converting early footage of Virgin Airways promotional films and digitalisation work relating to Windsor Castle, The Mary Rose and the late Queen Elizabeth II.

More Questions About this Format

A: Our photo album scanning process is simple, secure, and handled by experienced technicians. You just send us your albums — we carefully scan each page or individual photo using professional flatbed scanners that capture high-resolution images without removing the photos from their mounts. After scanning, we adjust colours, brightness, and contrast to ensure each image looks sharp and natural. Once complete, your digital album files are saved to USB, download link, or DVD, and both your originals and digital copies are safely returned to you.

A: In most cases, we can scan your photos directly from the album, so you don’t have to remove or risk damaging them. Our equipment can scan through clear plastic sleeves and mounted pages without causing harm. However, if a photo is under reflective film or has become stuck, we may recommend a gentle removal to achieve the best scan quality — but we’ll always contact you first for approval.

A: We typically scan photo album images at 600 dpi or higher, depending on your needs. This resolution is perfect for viewing on modern screens and printing enlargements without any visible loss of detail. For professional archiving or editing, we also offer high-resolution options up to 1,200 dpi. Each image is individually assessed and adjusted to deliver optimal sharpness and colour accuracy.

A: To keep your albums protected during shipping, wrap each one in acid-free tissue paper or bubble wrap, and place them in a sturdy box with padding to prevent movement. Include your completed order form inside the box, then send your parcel to:

A: Yes — we carefully scan every visible photo in your album, even if sizes vary or some are partially overlapping. For tightly arranged albums, we may need to scan sections individually and crop them digitally to ensure no image is missed. You can choose whether you’d like each photo saved separately or full-page scans that preserve the original album layout.

A: Absolutely. Each page is scanned sequentially to maintain the exact order and layout of your album. If requested, we can even name folders or image files to match your album titles or themes (for example, “Holiday 1989” or “Wedding Album”). This way, your digital album copies are perfectly organised and easy to browse.

A: Yes — if you’d like, we can include scans of the album covers, handwritten captions, or decorative pages to preserve the look and feel of your original collection. This option is popular for those who want to keep a digital copy of the entire album, not just the photos inside.

A: In most cases, yes. If your photo albums have stuck or deteriorating pages, our team uses gentle methods to separate them safely and recover as many images as possible. We can also apply digital restoration to repair faded colours, creases, or stains once the scans are complete.
