Convert Super 8 Films to USB
The video to the left explains how our Super 8 transfer service works and includes sample footage from completed conversions. It gives you a realistic view of the detail, colour and stability that may be recovered from original reels, while showing the care taken during inspection, scanning and preparation of the finished files.
Supaphoto operates a fully equipped professional studio using specialist cine film equipment and current restoration software. Dedicated 2K to 5K resolution scanners capture each frame individually, helping us produce stable, broadcast-quality digital files without filming a projected image. Our transfer process is 100% sprocketless, reducing reliance on fragile perforations and providing gentler handling for ageing or damaged film.
Before scanning begins, every reel undergoes a careful assessment. We inspect leaders, joins, sprocket holes and the general condition of the film, then select the most suitable capture approach. Our professional-grade equipment is regularly maintained to support consistent image quality and reliable film transport.
For reels affected by surface scratches, optional Pro Wetgate scanning can reduce the visibility of many fine marks. AI-assisted restoration is also available to improve selected elements such as image stability, colour, contrast and clarity while retaining the original character of the footage.
If the first transfer does not meet our expected standard, we can rescan the reel using alternative equipment or adjusted capture settings. Approximately 99% of the cine films we receive can be successfully digitised and recovered, regardless of their age or condition.
Alongside Super 8, we handle Standard 8, 9.5mm and 16mm film. Where compatible magnetic or optical sound is present, this can also be captured. Customers with several reel types may find our specialist service for preserving mixed cine collections useful, while our guide to the origins and enduring appeal of home-movie film provides helpful background on the format.

What you can Expect From Us & Advantages
Choosing someone to handle your original cine films requires trust as well as technical expertise. At Supaphoto, every Super 8 reel is handled and digitised individually in our UK studio by experienced technicians with more than 20 years of industry knowledge.
You can still speak to a real person about your films, whether you need help identifying an unfamiliar reel, understanding your delivery options or deciding whether an advanced treatment could improve the result. We provide order updates and tracking information, helping you follow your films through the process with confidence.
Each transfer passes through multi-point quality assurance checks covering the captured picture, any available sound and the finished digital files. Your original reels are handled carefully throughout and always returned after digitisation. We aim to provide a fast turnaround while giving each collection the attention it needs.
There is no charge for blank or untransferable reels, and your order does not include a hidden annual cloud-storage subscription. Optional cloud hosting is available for customers who want convenient online access and easier sharing, but it remains your choice rather than an ongoing requirement.
For damaged or challenging footage, optional advanced services can provide a stronger outcome where appropriate. Customers with several types of reel may also benefit from our specialist service for varied cine film collections.
Our approach is supported by more than 500 genuine five-star customer reviews. Supaphoto has also assisted television production companies and programmes, including the BBC’s The Repair Shop, together with museums and institutions responsible for preserving original archive material.
Before posting your films, our guide to organising and packing old reels safely can help you prepare them correctly. Further advice on identifying, handling and preserving film is available through our specialist cine knowledge centre.
We are really proud to be an ongoing technical partner to the TV Production Company behind for the BBC’s Repair Shop and have worked on multiple programmes.

Now with our REVIVAL AI process we can use AI driven software to even further enhance your film by recovering true authentic detail whilst keeping that lovely look and feel.
Cine film can become brittle, faded, or damaged over time, making treasured footage harder to view and preserve. Converting it to DVD helps protect your memories in a convenient format before the original film deteriorates further.

More Help & Guidance
Benefits of Choosing This Service
Transferring Super 8 film onto USB makes treasured family footage easier to watch, copy and share without repeatedly running ageing reels through an old projector. Your films can be viewed on many compatible computers and televisions, while additional copies can be created for relatives or stored separately for protection.
Professional frame-by-frame scanning also avoids the flicker, uneven brightness and loss of focus often caused by recording an image projected onto a wall. Supaphoto handles each reel individually, checks its condition and returns the original film after transfer.
If your archive contains several gauges rather than Super 8 alone, our specialist service for mixed cine reel collections can accommodate Standard 8, 9.5mm and 16mm material within the same preservation project.
How to Place an Order
Gather your reels together and retain their original boxes, labels and handwritten notes. Dates, names and locations can help you identify the footage later, particularly if the collection has been inherited. Number the reels clearly if you want them transferred or named in a particular sequence.
You do not need to identify every format, calculate the precise running time or determine whether sound is present. Supaphoto can inspect the film after it arrives and advise whether cleaning, repairs or an advanced treatment may be worthwhile.
Choose your preferred output and optional services, then follow the ordering instructions for sending or delivering the films. Avoid unwinding reels or repairing broken joins with ordinary adhesive tape. Our guide to preparing cine film safely before sending it explains how to package and organise your collection.
An Easy Process from Reel to USB
You do not need a projector, editing software or detailed knowledge of cine film. When your order arrives, each reel is logged, inspected and prepared for scanning. Technicians check leaders, joins, perforations and the film surface before selecting the most appropriate transfer approach.
The footage is then captured using specialist scanning equipment and reviewed through a multi-stage quality-control process. If the first capture reveals an issue, the reel can be reassessed and the settings adjusted rather than accepting an unsuitable result.
Once the work is complete, your digital files are placed on the selected USB and your original films are returned. Customers who need a broader choice of master files and delivery formats may also consider our flexible service for preserving cine footage digitally.
Digital Download, USB or DVD – What Is Best?
USB is often the most practical physical choice for modern households. It is compact, easy to store and compatible with many computers and smart televisions, although playback support varies between devices. Files can also be copied from the USB to other suitable storage locations.
A digital download offers quicker online access and can make sharing straightforward. Downloaded files should be saved promptly and backed up rather than left in one location. DVD may suit relatives who prefer familiar disc-based viewing and still have a compatible player, but many newer laptops and televisions no longer include disc drives.
Customers comparing physical options can review our disc-based service for home cine viewing. Whichever delivery method you choose, keep more than one copy and retain the original reels.
Pricing Guidance
The cost of a Super 8 transfer depends on the quantity of film, the actual amount wound onto each reel, the output selected and whether optional cleaning, repairs or restoration are required. Two reels with the same diameter may contain different running times if one is only partly filled.
When comparing providers, check what is included in the quoted price. Inspection, scanning resolution, sound capture, file preparation, physical media, return delivery and advanced enhancement may be charged differently. The cheapest headline rate may therefore not represent the complete cost.
Supaphoto can assess unfamiliar reels and explain which services are relevant before unnecessary extras are added. Blank or untransferable items are not charged for. Those with earlier Standard 8 material can also review our dedicated option for older 8mm family film.
Good Old-Fashioned Customer Service
Old cine reels often hold unique recordings of relatives, weddings, holidays and childhood homes. Being able to speak to a real person can therefore be just as important as the equipment used to scan them.
Supaphoto provides practical support for questions about unidentified formats, damaged film, possible soundtracks, delivery choices and restoration options. Clear communication is especially helpful when nobody in the family knows what the reels contain.
You can also consult our customer information covering orders and media handling for answers to common practical questions. Combining approachable service with specialist technical knowledge helps customers choose the right level of treatment without needing to understand scanning specifications or historic film terminology.
Understanding Super 8 and Similar Formats
Several cine gauges can look alike when stored on small reels, and boxes are not always reliable because films may have been moved between containers.
| Format | Common identifying feature | Typical use | Possible sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super 8 | Small perforations and a larger picture area | Family films from the mid-1960s onwards | Magnetic stripe may be present |
| Standard 8 | Larger perforations along both edges | Earlier home movies and amateur film | Usually silent |
| 9.5mm | Perforations positioned through the centre | European home and commercial film | Silent or optical |
| 16mm | Wider film, commonly found on larger reels | Education, industry and professional production | Magnetic or optical |
Our guide to distinguishing the two main 8mm gauges provides additional identification clues without requiring you to run the film through a projector.
Cine Film Learning Zone
What is Super 8 film?
Super 8 is an 8mm motion-picture format introduced to make home filmmaking simpler. Its cartridge-loading system was easier to use than earlier film systems, while smaller perforations allowed more space for the recorded image.
Can Super 8 contain sound?
Yes. Some reels carry a magnetic soundtrack stripe along one edge. Many family films remain silent, so sound cannot always be confirmed from the box or reel label alone.
Can damaged reels still be transferred?
Many films with broken joins, loose leaders, dirt or minor perforation damage can still be prepared and scanned. The likely result depends on the condition of the film base and image layer.
The background story of home-movie filmmaking offers further context on why the format became so widely used.
Film Cleaning and Restoration
Film stored for several decades may collect dust, fingerprints, lubricant, mould residue and other contaminants. These can affect picture clarity and may interfere with safe movement through the scanner. Each reel should therefore be inspected before any cleaning begins.
Water, household sprays and general-purpose solvents should never be applied to cine film. Unsuitable products may soften the emulsion, distort the film base or leave permanent residue. Professional preparation may include controlled surface cleaning, repair of failed joins and replacement of weak leaders.
After scanning, digital restoration can improve selected problems such as instability, fading, colour imbalance, poor contrast or distracting marks. It cannot recreate detail that was never recorded, but it can make the surviving footage clearer and more enjoyable. Our guidance on building a safer long-term family archive explains why the original reels should also be preserved.
Wetgate Film Scanning
Wetgate scanning is an optional specialist treatment that can reduce the visible appearance of fine surface scratches. During capture, an appropriate fluid temporarily fills shallow marks, allowing light to pass through them more evenly. On suitable reels, this can produce a cleaner-looking image and make distracting lines less noticeable.
The process does not remove every form of damage. Deep scratches, missing emulsion, severe fading, mould staining and poorly exposed footage cannot be corrected simply by using Wetgate. Each reel must therefore be assessed to determine whether the treatment is appropriate and likely to provide a meaningful improvement.
Wetgate is generally most useful for important footage where surface scratching affects otherwise usable images. It should be recommended according to the film’s condition rather than added automatically to every transfer.
5K Film Scanning
A 5K scan captures a high level of information from each frame and can be useful for archive masters, restoration work, future editing or customers who want to preserve as much available image detail as practical.
Higher resolution does not automatically correct poor focus, camera movement or underexposure. Its main advantage is recording the surviving image thoroughly before resizing, processing or creating smaller viewing copies. High-resolution files can also be considerably larger, so suitable storage and reliable backups are important.
The most appropriate scan depends on the gauge, condition and intended use of the footage. Owners of wider film may also wish to consider our high-resolution preservation service for 16mm reels. Supaphoto can advise when 5K scanning is likely to offer a genuine benefit rather than simply creating a larger file.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Testing fragile film in an old projector. Worn mechanisms can break joins, tear perforations or add fresh scratches.
- Using household cleaning products. Water, sprays and unsuitable solvents may permanently damage the film.
- Discarding boxes and handwritten labels. Dates, names and laboratory markings can help identify the footage.
- Sending loose reels without protection. Keep each reel in a secure container and prevent movement inside the parcel.
- Keeping the finished files only on one USB. Create additional copies and store them separately.
- Assuming every television supports every file. Check the playback capabilities of the intended device.
